The new AIDC centre
The state-of-the-art European Centre of
Excellence for the Automatic Identification and Data
Capture (AIDC) Technologies is a new multi-million pound
project that will establish the UK as the leading
independent European authority on AIDC technologies which,
of course, include barcodes, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID),
Smart Cards and Biometrics.
The centre, headquartered in Halifax,
West Yorkshire, will be formally opened this month by Stephen Timms, the
Government's Minister for Competitiveness and Consumer Affairs.
The centre is a true public-private
partnership. It offers AIDC advocacy services to all industries – and
it operates on a not-for-profit basis. The centre is supported by local,
regional and national government and the EU. The former DTI, now the
Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), invited
AIM UK the independent industry association for these technologies to
lead the initiative following the publication of the Electronics
Innovation Growth Team (EIGT) report at the end of 2004.
.On November 1st 2007 The Guardian
published a supplement
to help you understand who the AIDC centre is, and how these
technologies can help you in your personal or business life. There has
been much hype and misinformation in recent months about one of these
technologies – RFID. This hype has threatened to confuse the
market-place. As an independent not-for-profit centre you can rely on
the knowledge, expertise and integrity of the AIDC Centre.
“The premier source of information
and knowledge on AIDC for the UK and the rest of Europe……” -
Rt. Hon. Stephen Timms, Minister for Competitiveness
